Through the narrative of music and the arts, I endeavor to make positive contributions and impart a sense of community to my students and teaching peers
is an arts educator with research interests in music, digital media, educational technology, teacher preparation, and the digital aesthetic. Locally, she is in demand as a presenter and clinician in music education technology as well as cultural non-profit development.
Her research and writing interests cover the broader paradigm shifts in the ways in which we engage with digital media. This qualitative, interdisciplinary approach impacts youth culture in relationship to classroom learning. Through scholarly activities, combined with many years of classroom experience, Dr. Nielsen’s teaching practice is grounded in innovative and relevant research.
Oversees and directs the Theater program and the NCSSM Morganton Chorale; integral Faculty member of the interdisciplinary Humanities Department. Teaches classical guitar and piano, digital media production, and theater. Advises and coaches students in performances and as pre-college competitions.
Establishes school-wide arts curriculum; oversees concert and visual arts event planning and promotions; serves as department chair. Member of the Academic Leadership Team to align school’s cultural arts and interrelated programs horizontally and vertically. Teaches Film and Digital Media Production, Directs Music Theater Productions and choral arts.
Taught graduate and undergraduate level courses in the College of Performing Arts. Developed interactive lessons and engaging lectures. Served on university committees to promote the Marie Rader Concert Series. Worked closely with Rowan Community Music School to develop and promote program growth.
Managed and evaluated faculty as Chair for K-12 performing arts curriculum development. Produced concerts, stage plays, and community arts events. Administered budget for departmental operations and events. Provided academic and creative advice to performing arts students. Taught Chorus, Music Theater, Music Theory, Music Appreciation, and Digital Media.
